There is a common belief in China that infidelity doesn’t
exist there. Many individuals claim that no one in China engages in
extramarital relationships due to their traditional morality. That is a
positive stereotype as it depicts China as a place of unwithering faithfulness.
While the idea that marital fidelity in China is universal paints a great
image, this is unfortunately false. There is ample evidence to demonstrate that
this claim is untrue. Infidelity exist everywhere including China. Furthermore,
infidelity did not arise in China specifically by their embracing of western
societies behaviors and norms. It was already prevalent in some areas of China
and is present there for various reasons. In fact, there are several reasons
why infidelity is present in China and no way to pinpoint its origins to
westernization.

The claims that infidelity does not
exist in China is false. These implications derived from a stereotype that
China is a place of unconditional love and faithfulness. According to the article
“Sexual Infidelity in China: Prevalence and Gender-Specific Correlates” A
Sexuality Survey of China was conducted, which provided data on individuals who
believed extramarital sex was acceptable. The survey was of  “3,567 people from ages 18 to 49 who were in
a marital (89%) or dating/cohabiting (11%) relationship.” The results showed
that 26% of women  and 40% of men thought
extramarital relationships were somewhat or completely acceptable. The survey
also supplies information on infidelity during the 12 months prior to the date
the survey was conducted. The article states that “the prevalence of infidelity
during the last 12 months was 4.5% (women’s non-commercial sex), 11.0% (men’s
non-commercial), and 5.5% (men’s commercial), with each percent matching or
exceeding the median for other countries.” Given the information, it suggests
that not only do residents of China believe in extramarital relationships, some
do engage in the act.

In China, it is quite common for females to hire
private investigators to gather information on their male counterparts to
pursue a female led divorces. This is significant because it suggests that
females in China are very often suspicious of their partner and believe them to
be engaging in extramarital relationships. The article “Regulating private
affairs in contemporary China: Private investigators and the policing of
spousal infidelity” focuses specifically on “the recent emergence of
investigations of spousal infidelity.” It has been proven that this newly
emerging job has significantly filled the gap in the market. This increasing
demand for private investigators or “infidelity sleuths” as they are called in
the article, highlights the true nature of China’s state and  relationships.
