Unit 1: A Nation is Born Era- Begining to 1850 Project

The Columbian exchange was a period of time of many biological and cultural exchanges between the Native Americans and Europeans. It began after Columbus’s discovery of the Americas in 1492 and continued throughout the years following it. The Columbian exchange consisted of an exchange of many new kinds of foods, animals, plants, technologies, diseases, and ideas between the two worlds. When the explorer Christopher Columbus first found America, he discovered there many new species of plants and animals that did not exist in Europe. He then decided to establish new original trade routes so there could be an exchange of goods between the two sides. Because of this, there were many advancements and benefits to both the new world and the old one. The result of this exchange highly impacted the cultural, social, and economic development of both areas. There was also a high evolution of warfare, education, and agricultural production along with many other things. The Era of Good Feelings came about at the end of the war of 1812, around the time of the fall of the Federalist party. In 1816, at the last election that Federalists ran a candidate, they lost considerably. It was then in the 1818 congressional election that brought success to the Democratic-Republicans and their candidate, James Monroe as the fifth President of the United States. President James Monroe was in office for two full terms which lasted from 1817 to 1825. This duration is referred to as the Era of Good Feelings but even if it may have been right in the cultural sense, this was not the case socially and economically. The Democratic-Republicans had become very disunited on the inside and soon a new system had to be created to replace the older Republican-Federalist’s First Party System.  This period from 1815 to 1825 not only saw to an evident increase in the pride and the nationalism in the American society, but also of the Frequent rise of many political, economic, and social issues. This rapid increase of cultural nationalism brought forth the idea that this era after the War of 1812 was an “Era of Good Feelings”. The build-up to the American Civil War put a lot of stress on the balance between the number of free states and slave states in the union, and on those who would be deciding whether newly organized states would be admitted as slave states or as free states. The Compromise of 1850 consisted of five laws passed in September 1850 that dealt with the issues of slavery. In 1849 the state of California requested permission to enter the Union as a free state. This request, if accepted, could potentially have upset the balance between the number of free and slave states in the U.S. It was then that Senator Henry Clay introduced a series of resolutions on January 1850 in an attempt to seek a compromise and avert a crisis between the North and South. As part of this Compromise, any slave trading in Washington, D.C. was terminated and the Fugitive Slave Act, modified. California was entered in the Union as a free state.
